How to use the Vowel & Consonant Counter
Paste or type your text in the left panel. All counts update instantly as you type. The results panel on the right shows a breakdown by character type, with bar charts for visual comparison and an A–Z letter frequency grid showing how often each letter appears — vowels highlighted in green.
What counts as a vowel?
In English, the vowels are A, E, I, O, U (both uppercase and lowercase). The letter Y is sometimes considered a vowel depending on context, but this tool counts it as a consonant following standard linguistic convention. All other letters of the alphabet are counted as consonants.
Special characters include punctuation marks, symbols (@, #, !, ?, etc.), brackets, and any non-alphanumeric character. Newline characters are counted as spaces for consistency.
Frequently asked questions
No — Y is counted as a consonant in this tool, following the standard English alphabet classification. While Y can function as a vowel in words like "gym" or "by", its classification varies by context and linguistic framework. For consistency, this tool uses the traditional consonant classification.
Accented Latin characters (é, ü, ñ, etc.) are currently counted as special characters rather than vowels or consonants, since their classification depends on the language. Only standard A–Z letters are counted as vowels or consonants.
Special characters are any characters that are not letters (A–Z), digits (0–9), or spaces. This includes punctuation (. , ! ? ; :), symbols (@, #, $, %, &), brackets, hyphens, and any other non-alphanumeric character.
